12 - Friday. September 25, 1992 - North Shore News N. Van church celebrates first phase of new expansion project NORTH VANCOUVER’S Gloria Dei Lutheran Church wil] celebrate the dedication of its new $700,000 sanctu- ary this Sunday. The new sanctuary is the first phase of an expansion project at the 1110 Gladwin Dr. church designed by architect R.K. Ewing of West Vancouver. The design and materials of the addition reflect the natural ele- menis of the West Coast. Natural light streams in through a number of windows, the most striking of which is a 19-foot by 10-foot stained glass window designed by Richard Cammerer of the Grunwald Guild of Washington. The window depicts aspects of the North Shore along with strong baptismal themes. The chancel furnishings are carved from 1,500-year-old cedar, which was chosen because of its sacred place in many of the cultures rhat first developed in Canada. The wood was obtained from the Queen Charlotte Islands. It had been cut down in the forest to enable the cutting of Sitka spruce for airplane manufacturing during the Second World War. The trees had lain on the forest floor until they were recently discovered. The floor of the sanctuary is made up of aggregate stones, washed smooth for centuries by the Chilliwack River. Bishop Don Sjoberg, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, will attend the dedica- tion service to bless the new sanc- tuary. The service is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., and Pastor Don Johnson has invited members of the North Shore community to join in the celebration.
