Labor Day telethon brings in funds on cable network THE 1992 Labour Day telethon for muscular dystrophy, carried for the first time on a ‘Cable Cares” network .of local cable TV systems across British Columbia, generated $1,025,382 in pledges toward the work of the British Columbia and Yukon region of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada (MDAC). The total received major boosts from firefighters from across Brit- ish Columbia — one of whom, Captain Terry Erskine of Saanich, is the national president of MDAC — and from Southlands Canada’s 7-11 stores, Harley- Davidson motorcycle owners from Delta, Vancouver Island and Kamloops and the ladies auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Vancouver Canuck Ryan Walters was a two-time star on the show, appearing in person as a special guest, then adding his name to a lengthy list of gold star donors ($100 or more). The ‘sale’ of gold and silver ($50) Stars generated both interest and several thousand dollars in con- tributions. Mayors Lou Sekora of Co- quitlam, William Copeland of Burnaby and Murray Dykeman of North Vancouver District, Coun- cillors Art Wilkinson of Port Moody, Margaret Gordon of Port Coquitlam and Judy Higgin- botham of Surrey added a lively municipal challenge-matching element to the televised fundrais- er. Even inmates from a provincial institution joined in the cause, with their cheque among many presented at the Delta Pacific Resort Hotel and Convention Centre in Richmond, production centre this year for the B.C. part of the Jerry Lewis telethon for muscular dystrophy. The funds will be used to serve MDAC clients — including the provision of wheelchairs and other equipment to assist in mobility, breathing and other physicai activ- ities impaired by neuromuscular disorders -—~ and to support research seeking a cure for such disorders. The firefighters — with departments from communities across the province having worked year-round to generate funds for MDAC’s important work — brought in a total of $501,823, presented on air to Saanich firefighter Terry Erskine, who also is the national MDAC president. The Harley Owners Group (HOGs) of Kamloops raised near- ly $45,000 for the telethon and the HOGs of Vancouver Istand brought in $17,000. The Eagles’ ladies auxiliary presented $21,095 and Southlands 7-11 stores raised nearly $90,000 for B.C. out of a national total of more than $287,000. Inmates from the Ferndale In- stitution in the Mission area of the Fraser Valley raised $2,500 in a unique walk for MDAC. Another significant contribution came from “Bust and Bail’’ pro- jects held at Bental! IV under Canada Trust’s sponsorship and at the Richmond Shopping Cen- tre. Norma Saltzberg, B.C. region director, said the telethon is a ma- jor fundraising function for MDAC, formed 38 years ago as a national voluntary agency com- mitted to eliminating neuromuscular disorders and alleviating the associated distress. The Jerry Lewis telethon origi- nated in Las Vegas. The B.C. segment came from Richmond under direction of producer Carter Zygmunt. Pledges and contributions to the telethon may be sent directly to the Muscular Dystrophy Associa- tion of Canada, B.C. and Yukon Region, 4303-1338 West Broad- way, Vancouver, B.C.
