26 — Sunday, April 26, 1992 - North Shore News Course will focus on caring for aging parents NORTH SHORE Family Services Society (NSFSS) is offering a three-week course to help people care for their aging parents. Elaine Book, a. geriatric rehabilitation social worker, will teach the course, Aging Parents — Coping and Caring, which starts on Tuesday, April 28 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Book says many factors make it more difficult these days to look after our narents. **As the population continues to get older and families begin to shrink in sibling size, there are fewer children to share the re- sponsibility,’’ she says. She also points out that peo- ple’s homes aren’t usually large enough to accommodate addi- tional bodies, and that women — who were the traditional caregivers — commonly work outside the home while also rais- ing their own children. Book will first cover the aging process which includes the loss of independence, responsibility, spouse, job and health. ‘People Jose a lot of their lives as they age,’’ she says. She will then suggest ways adult children can help parents compen- sate for certain losses. ‘‘A simple thing like poor hearing can affect the way a senior socializes or uses the telephone, or whether he or she goes to family functions.’’ She will also offer coping and managing strategies such as safety in the home and the use of medication. The last session will cover the question of when and whether a parent should go to a care facility, what to look for in these facilities, and the community services and resources available. The course costs $25 and par- ticipants are advised te pre- register. NSFSS is a United Way member agency dedicated to enriching and strengthening family life. Their family life education courses are co-sponsored by North Shore Continuing Educa- tion.
