Rob Anderson and his brother Tor met Steve Bain a few years ago when they were all employed at the Cactus Club Restaurant in North Vancouver as servers, bar- tenders and managers. The three, then in their early 20s, formed a lasting, friendship, and eventually, a plan to open their own funky, upscale eatery. On June 5, the North Shore boys quietly opened the doors and welcomed the pub- lic into their new restaurant on Granville Island, The Cat’s Meow. It’s a story that’s cerily familiar. In the mid-"80s, two wait- ers at North Vancouver’s Earl's Tin Palace joined forces to open Cate Cucamongas in Vancouver. The pair -— Scott Morison and Richard Jaffray — went on to launch the wild- ly successfull Cactus Club Rorthlands Sar & Grill 3400 Anne HacDonald Wey, NY 924-2950 $$$ Park Royal Hotel 540 Clyde Ave. WY 926-5511 $85 Pat's Restaurant 445 V3th St, WY 926-8922 $$ Seymour Golf & Country Ctub Open to the public Mandays & Fridays 3723 bt, Seymour Phwy_ WY 929-5491 SSS Shore Winds Lonsdale Quay, WY 904-3046 $$$ Sundowner Restaurant 8995 Lawrence Way, WY 9212-8161 $$$ Village Bistro 3135 Edgemont Blvd., NY 980-5535 S$$ Amadeo Bakehouse & Coffees (468 Marine Dr. WV 922-3813 $ Cravings Gourmet 5353 Headland Dr. W¥ 925-9540 $ Euro Deli 118 £. Now Anderson, Anderson and Bain are hoping to take 4 page out of their former employers’ book. “It was when we were trav- clling in Asia and Australia last year that we really started get- ting serious and researching what we wanted to do,” said Rob. “We'd go into restau- rants and take notes, write down ideas about what we liked.” ‘The search for the perfect site began after the brothers returned from their travels. They found it in an airy ware- house-style building tucked next to the turtle pond on Granville Island. Until fast August, it housed the co-op restaurant Isadora’s. “It’s a wicked location and we liked the openness of the space, the beams. We got a great feel for the place — there was so much unused poten- tial.” But to get at that potential required work. They took pos- session of the building avar the end of April and worked with crews around the clock to transform the cramped, cray- ola-coloured room into the # 109-223 Min. And the rest of the restau- rant also saw radical changes. Now it’s cozy with warm ochre walls, high brown beams, hardwood planking recycled from the old North Shore shipyards and a brick- walled bar. Customers can also sink into big leather couches in the upstairs lounge. The trio also wanted to do something special with their food and drink offerings. A consulting chef helped them develop a menu that includes some delicious and unusual dishes: “firsts,” like Tiger Shrimp and Chorizo Spring Rolls; and “mains” such as a classic AAA grade steak, topped with the cus- tomer’s choice of Wild Mushroom Sauce, Caramelized Onions and Bleu Cheese or Green Peppercorn Sauce. The menu is big and Meow includes vegetarian dishes as well as pastas, pizzas, burgers and more. Dratt beers include the Alley Cat Pale Ale, brewed for the restaurant by Granville Island Brewery, and the wine list is a manageable mix of 2) reds and 21 whites, plus five of each available by the glass. Rob is espectally proud of their coffee menu. “In Australia they don’t serve brewed coffee, but See Proud page 27 MOTHER INDIA Take out Foops & Home Dauivery 5-10 pm 7 days/week 900 16th, North Van.
