EVERYBODY APPRECI- ATES the addition of a lii- tle color in their fives. This may be why we put up with the shenanigans of our poli- ticians: the shameful red of Mr. Vander Zalm, the dull grey of Rita J. and that distinctly rosey tinge from Mr. Harcourt. Geoff Tobiasson OVER THE GARDEN GATE Colcr not only defines the per- sonalities of our political heroes (villains) it may be seen to define ours as well. 1 find myseif in- trigued and inspired by gardens that present colorful displays of annuals or perennials; they seem to suggest vitality and the healthy attitudes of their creators. As mentioned last week, the flowering period of the plants you propose to use in the perennial garden should be one of the major considerations factored into its design. It takes a truly inspired and innovative nature to stretch seasonal color to the point where it is with us almost all year long. With this is mind let's take a closer look at one of the many candidates worth considering for color at this time of the year. The Japanese Anemone (anemone x hybrida syn. a. japonica) is one of my favorites. If you are looking for a tall, Hunter heat, glowing logs and dancin chimney needed when used w. These truly handsome plants reach heights of two to tour feet and will reliabiy bear prodigious displays of white through pink flowers. Even so, they stand up well to the water works and ac- companying wind offered by our Pacific Northwest climate with lit- de, if any, staking required. These plants are so rewarding and basically trouble-tree, they could easily be considered as in- dispensable in the garden. They will tolerate a fairly wide assort- ment of soils and can be made to adapt to many light and moisture conditions. The preferred soil is one which is well-drained yet high in organic fibre. This assures that excess water is allowed to disperse while residual amounts of moisture and nutrients are doled out over the dry(?) season. As I said, this plant will adapt to circumstances which present less than perfect amounts of light. Give them plenty of sun, however, if you are looking for the longest-lasting and most prolific display of flowers. The nutrients required to sus- tain healthy growth are minimal, but additions of bonemeal in the fall and a_ bonemeal-enriched compost in the spring will always improve the show. Although well-rotted manure is almost as effective as compost, the higher levels of nitrogen can reduce flower production at the same time as promoting leaf and plant cody growth. This would make it an excellent material to add to the soils around newly planted specimens. The Japanese anemones can be slow to start in the first year or two and the addition of an organic source of nitrogen such as this can speed things up a bit. Leaving these plants undisturb- ed for as long as possible will en- courage the development of a strong, fibrous root system. This will promote the generation of vg flames for a few cents an ith a power vent. fireplace gives you a free SALES & SERVICE | 2990 Mountain Hwy. & Ross Road Lyuan Valley The Japanese anemone is ‘indispensable’ more shoots and oa stronger display.
