Marguerite Gildersleeve, 62, last
week completed a S0-kilometre
swim — roughly the distance from
West Vancouver to Whistler —
after putting in a kilometre a day
over two months.

The mother of eight: and the
grandmother of 13 climbed from
the West Vancouver Aquatic Cen-
ire pool just after noon recently,
marking the end of her symbelic
swim.

Fifty participants made the
aquatic journey for health and
fitness, swimming 40 lengihs —
one kilometre — a day.

“It’s not a speed thing at all —
it’s just for endurance,"’ said
Gildersleeve's proud husband,
Wilf. “It’s rather an achievement
for a 62-year-old woman.”*

THE BAY and North Shore
Special Olympics (NSSO) are join-
ing forces to help local residents
get ready for Christmas with new
haircuts.

The staff of The Bay’s hair
salon will give the haircuts and are
donating their time and skill to the
fund-raising project.

Haircuts will be $5 and all pro-
ceeds will go through The Bay's
Charity Bear fund earmarked for
NSSO.

Volunteers from Special Olym-
pics will be on hand to answer
questions about their organization.

The event takes place Saturday,
Dec. !2 on the main floor of The
Bay at Park Royal from 9:30 a.m.
to 5:30 p.m.

Special Olympics offers pro-
grams year-round for mentally
handicapped people of all ages,
and on the North Shore there are
Programs currently underway in
swimming, bowling, keep fit and
floor hockey.

Dependable volunteers are
always welcome and at present
there is a need for a floor hockey
manager, said NSSO_ spokesman
Martha Barker.
