Blues basketball season starts THE OPENING of the 1987-88 basketball season for the Capilano College Blues men’s team comes Oct. 22. After five weeks of hard training, the Blues are anxiously awaiting their first test, which comes courtesy of Clearbrook’s Columbia College at Delbrook Gym at 8:15 p.m. At Delbrook Oct. 24, both the Blues men’s and women’s team will be in action against their respective grad teams. The women’s game goes at 6:30 p.m., with the men’s game scheduled to follow at 8:15 p.m. Columbia College will be com- mencing only their second season of college basketball and will play as an independent school this year. They have applied for entry into the tough B.C. College Athletic Association basketball league for Cap rugby ‘sides remain undefeated AFTER FOUR weeks of leayue play, three of the four Capilano rugby senior sides remain undefeated and lead their respec- tive divisions. . In recent play, the first, second and third divisions swept their op- ponents from the University of British Columbia Old Boys Club (UBCOB). In first division play, Glen Audete kicked two goals to give the Caps players all the points they needed as they blanked their op- ponents 6-0. The score was flatter- ing to UBCOB as the Caps were denied tries three times without ever being tested themselves. The second division swamped the previously unbeaten Old Boys 38-3 with tough forward play and determined running. The thirds had a similar romp, winning their game handily, 27-3. The fourth division had a bye. in other Capilano rugby matches recently, three of the four senior teams won matches in games played against the strong Trojan club from Vancouver. The first XV blanked their op- ponents 15-0 in a rugged affair. Flyhalf Randy Sundher led the Caps with a try and a penalty goal, while scrumhalf Will Lowden and wk Tim Murdy each added a try. ‘The second XV lost a close match 12-7 despite having the ter- ritorial edge throughout: the second half, while the third XV extended their remarkable two-year undefeated record with a 13-3 win and the fourth XV went 2-0 for the season with a 9-7 victory. the 1988-89 season, and should get a good preview of that level of competition when they take on the Blues. The grad games Oct. 24 will provide major tests for both rookie-laden men’s and women’s Blues teams. The men’s edition of the grads will be led by 6’9”’ Mark Marter, a former Junior National Team member and a college ali-Canadian when he played with the Blues. Ex-Blue Tim Mills will also suit up for the grads. A Club for All Seasons, All Reasons Masters swimmers break new records SWIMMERS FROM the Seymour Rapids Masters Swim Club broke a Canadian and provincial record at a meet held recently at Simon Fraser University with all partici- pants placing in the top three in each event. Nine members of the swim team went to the swim meet, and Seymour Rapids members com- peting included Sue Chambers, Peter Cruise, David Fietcher, Patricia Gilmore, David Good- man, Roy Goecdman, Elizabeth Krajicek, and Ruth Rodger. Best times were recorded by uost of the participants. The highlight of the meet was Cruise's Canadian record in the 100-metre breaststroke event. In an outstanding early season perfor- mance, Cruise established the new Canadian mark of 1:12.94 for the 35-39 age group, bettering the old standard by three seconds. “This promises to be a very good year for the Seymour Rapids Masters and for masters swimming in B.C.,"' said club member Flet- cher, who noted the Canadian Na- tional Championships are being held in Vancouver during May 1988.
