I would like to publicly s set the record straight on the subject of District council's discussions about the recent demonstration in ds to the proposed Cove Cliff ~ sthool.: Contrary to your headlines of June 25th and = your editorial of June 29th, the majority of council did not engage in public criticism of the RCMP’s actions.. The motion passed by council was to refer the matter to our police liaison com- mittee, and to state that we did not condone infractions of the Criminal Code or the Motor Vehicle Act. Your reporter was correct in Stating that some mem- bers of council, including ‘the acting mayor, did voice Citizens present at . traffic hindrance, criticism of the actions of the police, However, 1 —take- Strong. exception to the implication that this criticism was in any way unanimous. I, for one, dissociated — myself from these remarks and stated clearly at the public meeting ‘that I feel the RCMP han- dled the discretion with restraint. the demonstration have told me that, contrary to the exaggerated statements made by the acting mayor, there was no significant ‘no un- pleasant incidents, and that the RCMP acted at all times with courtesy and ef- feciency. The fact that NO matter and complaints were received by the police bears this out. I-would like to publicly repeat my statement of the council meeting:. that I support the manner in which the police dealt with this situation. I would like especially to commend Corporal Prendergast for his actions in this regard. Your editorial writer is correct in stating that the right to hold = pubdtic demonstrations is one that should be upheld by any democratic society. I was glad to see that the demonstraters carried out their protest in such an orderly manner, and I would hope that any ill-considered criticism of their actions would not deter any NEWS readers ‘need God's help’ Dear Editor: I was shocked to read your Sunday editorial criticizing District Alderman Lakes and condoning the attitude of our constabulary who would see no evil. ‘I have tried to keep in- formed. on the Burrard View-Cove Cliff con- trovérsy. I was surprised to learn that the vast majority of published letters to the editor were signed by educationalists. I was also surprised to learn that a local voters group, “NOVVA”, was over- whelmingly teachers and educational establishment. I ° was more than shocked to learn that while all ac- ceptable evidence has been submitted to council, these people would launch an intimidating power play on our elected officials, as Was evidenced at Deep Cove. Whether - 2 ‘the antics of the militant educationalists are legal or -not, and I suspect they are not, your. editorial responsibilities in this community are to foster good civic government. You should be aware that the constabulary are denied “the. privilege of engaging ‘in local politics, and for a very’ good reason. It seems to me" that if these naked power ‘plays by the educational establishment continue, then the taxpayers may find that a second look at their rights is. indicated. The privilege is presently being terribly abused. You seem to be abetting this.
