Canadian media ignored book about Israeli spies ANYGNE WHO is interest- ed in how timid and trendy the major media have become should take a look at how a best-selling Cana- dian book on Israel and its murderous Mossad in- telligence agency has been treated. [ refer to By Way Of Decep- tion, the blockbuster by Ottawa newsman Claire Hoy and former Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky, who says that his disclosures have put his life at risk. The Israeli government tried to have the book banned, and of- fered Ostrovsky money to cancel publication. It had reason to be concerned. There are books galore on in- telligence organizations, but this is the first inside story on Israel's, which until now has been the most secret of all. And with cause. For although the KGB and the CIA are no strangers to dirty tricks, they may be mere babes compared with Mossad. Here are just a few of the things Ostrovsky has revealed: Mossad draws up a list of enemies it wants wiped out. The lise then goes to Israeli prime ministers for approval. (Not a worrisome task for them, seeing that several have themselves been terrorists.) When 241 U.S. marines were killed in Beirut in 1983 by an Arab on a suicide mission, the Mossad knew the attack was planned but didn’t inform the Americans. It reckoned the attack would increase American hostility toward the Arabs, and thus serve Israel’s cause. Israel spies on its friends, and all Jews are seen as potential Mossad ‘‘helpers,”” or ‘‘sayanim,’’ of whom 2,000 are active in Lon- don alone. He doesn’t say how many there Doug Collins ON THE OTHER HAND are in Canada, but does say that Mossad illegally uses hundreds of Canadian passports. In the U.S., Jews working in the administration are targets for recruitment even though the Americans support Israel with massive foreign aid. U.S. industry is also a target. in One case, research stolen from American aircraft manufacturers was used to win an American defence contract! Se where do our media come into it? Well, this book is an in- ternational sensation, but you would hardly know it. Hoy told me it has been translated into 23 languages and was at the top of the New York Times bestseller list for five weeks. [1 is still number two. Reportedly, it sold 50,000 copies in the U.S. the first day it appeared. Britain’s Sunday Times ran four extracts from it. Paris-Match gave it eight pages. The authors were featured on an American network, and even Danish TV flew in a crew to interview them. [In view of all that you would think the CBC’s flagship public affairs program ‘‘The Journal’ would have covered the story. But no. Hoy says that Barbara Frum, who is Jewish, told his publisher's publicity woman: ‘‘How dare they put out a book like that that would do so much harm to Israel!" And The Journal didn’t touch if. Perhaps it was too busy doing items on the joys of bilin- gualism. CTV's **W5" also ignored the story, as did Peter Gzowski's “This Country In The Morning."* The daily press hardly covered itself with glory, either. Remember, this book was top news. Inthe U.S. a Jewish judge acted in the middle of the night on {Israel's demand for a ban on publication. An injunction was granted in Canada, too. There were no blushes from Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir. ‘We have asked for an injunction because we don’t want it published,’ he stated, making a point of the obvious. Israel lost both actions. Bur in Canada that was no thanks to the media. CBC News did do an item on the ban, but in general there were only obscure mentions in the press. It was different in the U.S. The New York Times ran a story on the front page, complete with details of what the book was all about. As Hoy put it, the news- Paper was saying, ‘‘If you want a fight on a freedom of speech issue, here it is.°* Yet it would be difficult to be more pro-Israeli than the Times, which is run by Jews. The book has its faults. There is too much detail on how Mossad agents are trained, for instance. But if only half of Ostrovsky’s stuff is true, it is still a winner.
