Significant new automo- biles include the Chrysler PT Cruiser, a retro-styled wagon with a versatile cargo area; the compact Ford Focus with its bold new- edge styling; the mid-size Saturn L-Series sedans and wagons, the economical Toyota Echo which replaces the ‘Vereel; and the new entry-level Volvo S40 and v40. Two new hybrid SUV/pickup trucks have joined the ranks this year: the Ford Explorer Snort Trac and the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab. They combine a roomy cab with a shortened bed. Though it’s not a hybrid, the all-new four-door Toyota Tundra pickup truck is also a significant new entry in the full-size pickup truck class. BMW enters the sport- utility class in 2000 with the all-new X5, an “all-activity” vehicle that’s supposed to handle paved roads as well as dirt roads. The new Ford Excursion can now lay claim to being the biggest sport- utility vehicle on the market. Lower down on the price scale is the new Nissan Xterra, a compact sport-util- ity “with attitude.” Even Hyundai has jumped into the SUV fray with the new Santa Fe, a compact all- wheel-drive SUV like the Honda CR-V. On the sports car front, the powerful new Honda $2000, Audi TT, BMW Z8, Teyota MR2 Spyder (not avatlable in Canada), and Ferrari 360 Modena threat- en to break some speed records if not sales records, the all-new Audi S4 sport sedan’ and Toyota Celica coupe are set to raise some eyebrows, and the new Jaguar S-Type and Lincoln LS performance sedan are aimed at the hottest part of the luxury car market. Popular models redesigned Two of the most popular domestic sedans, the Ford Taurus and Buick LeSabre, have been redesigned, with sensible design foremost in mind. In addition, there's a new full-size Pontiac Bonneville, a new Chevrolet Impala mid-sized sedan that rakes up where the Lumina leit off, and a new smaller Oldsmobile Aurora, which replaces the 88. Popular import sedans have also been redone: the Nissan Maxisua and Altima, Toyota Avalun, and Subaru Legacy/Outback are roomi- er and more powerful than before. Chevrolet’s big Monte Carlo coupe is new, BMW's 323Ci and 328Ci coupes follow the lead of the redesigned 3-Series sedans, a restyled Hyundai Tiburon is simply shocking, Jaguar ups the ante on high perfor- mance with the XKR, Porsche gocs faster with the Boxster S, and Acura plans a revised CL Coupe in the spring. Luxury cars, such as the complietely-redesigned Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, and Mercedes-Benz CL Coupe are new from the ground up; Cadillac BeVilies offer more tradi- tional American luxury, and the new Infiniti 130 is based on the equally-new Maxima. In the economy car class, a bigger Hyundai Accent, improved Daewoo Nubira, and an all-new Nissan Sentra offer more for the money. Only one minivan has been redesigned for 2000: the Mazda MPV, now front- wineel-drive. Full-size sport- utility vehicles, the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Jimmy and Suburban are now based on the new Silverado pickup chassis, and the compact Chevrolet Tracker shares the same bodystyle with the Suzuki Vitara. A year of innovative designs ‘The increasing popularity of sport-utility vehicles and wagons is spilling over into car design. Taller, roomier passenger cabins, versatile cargo areas, and increased ease of entry and exit: are three design features seen on many new 2000 model cars. The new Chrysler PT Cruiser, for example, has a surprisingly zoomy interior for such a compact vehicle. So does the tall-roofed sub- compact Toyota Echo and the sharp-edged Ford Focus. The redesigned Hyundai Accent, Nissan Sentra, and Chrysler Neon are also roomier. Mid-sized family sedans for 2000 remain conserva- tively-styied, but they're roomier too. The redesigned Ford Taurus, for example, has returned to a more con- ventional, space-efficient design with a bigger trunk and roomier passenger com- partment. When it comes to new sports cars however, practi- cality takes a back seat to bold styling and sizzling per- formance. The radically- round Audi TT, razor-edged Toyota Celica, pointy-nosed Honda $2000, retro-styled BMW Z8, and mid-engined Toyota MR2 Spyder (not available in Canada) are ali- new for 2000, cach with a very different approach to See more next page i ACCORDING to Audi, designers of the all new 2000 TT used the wheels as the focal point for their creative work.
