ssing javel Bob Mackin News Reperter MAE Turck is joyous about her javelin. She resumed training a few weeks ayo after her javelin was found, thanks to a News read- cr. * "Phe Vancouver masters ath- tere lost her $300 Swedish- made javelin alter an evening practice at Carisbrooke Park in arth Vancouver Sept. 21. Iz we found the’ next day by Capilano Highway Services worker Rob Grange. Turek set it on the sear bumper of hee truck, bur neglected to foad it in the back with her bicycle before heading home. Grange spotted the light- weight, white implement on the — casthound = Lonsdale omramp to the Upper Levels Highway daring a work assign- ment. “f just looked over and it Was sitting on the concrete tip of the iand between the high- way and) onramp,” says Grange. Grange took it home to Maple Ridge and tried throw- ing it at a park with his son. A co-worker, who was dri- ving the truck the day the javelin was picked up, read a News story on Oct. 3 about Turek. He showed it to Grange ar work the next day and Grange called Turek to arrange for the reunion. “f ended up talking to her on the phone for 20 minutes,” Grange says. “She's quite a spark plug.” Turek — who set Canadian masters records in discus, shot put and javelin in 1994 — gave Grange a jar of apple sauce and a teddy bear for his four-vear- old son as a token of her appre- ciation, She posted handbills around North Vancouver and placed classified newspaper ads, but she’s crediting a story in the News’ sports section for leading to the happy ending. “She definitely is happy, there’s no doubt about that,” Grange says. The javelin is not the weird- est item Grange has found at work. He found a boomerang on Highway 99 near Lions Bay, a dead body on First Avenue in North Vancouver and a blind man wandering around the Taylor Way ramp to the Upper Levels Highway. Cell phones, pagers, wallets and purses sre items commonly found on the highways, he says. As for Turck, she’s training for her goal: a medal at the world championships for mas- ters athletes. “Most people as they get older slow down,” she says. “I'm going up.” New fast ferry gets old name THE name Discovery was painted on the hull of BC Ferries’ second.
