Food safety a merry Christmas ache in your kitchen AN important con- sumer awareness ini- tiative was recently launched across Canada. The “Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education” is a cooperative effort from consumer and health organizations, gov- ernment ministries and departments, industry groups to educate the public on better food safety prac- tices. Research shows that there is a great and measur- able need for this. The majority of Canadians have a limited knowledge about the sources and nature of tood- related illnesses, and often fail to routinely follow safe food-handling practices. The common sense rules of the kitchen have not changed for decades. Assuming that safe and healthful food was pur- chased and brought home there are four golden rules to adhere to: @ Clean: wash hands, uten- sils and surfaces with hat soapy water before, during, and after preparing foods. Sanitize countertops, cut- ting boards and utensils with a mild bleach and water solution.
