Sin, a North Vancouver resident in his 50s, was driving the car in which his 83-year- ald mother, Wai Kin Wong died. Also in the car were Sin’s wife and their three children, ages 19, 13 and six at the ume, The Sin family was coming home after dining with triends in Burnaby. “From time ro time, that accident still flashes in’ my dreams when I sleep,” said Sin on Thursday. Sin’s car was travelling up Delbrook Avenue on Nov. 9. Coming down Delbrook in a van was Krzysztof Konik, then 40, a Vancouver resident. Konik had a blood alcohol close ta O.15 when he swerved imo the Sin’s Jang in the 3700-block of Delbrook Avenue, according to police. Since the fatal accident, Sin’s oldest. child has had emotional problems. Another child is selfecon- scious about scars on one leg resulting from the crash. Less than two months ago Konik was found guilty ‘of impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing, bodily harm after a trial in B.C. Supreme Court. Mr. Justice Duncan W. Shaw sentenced Konik on Jan. 29 toa 12-month conditional sentence, Konik’s driver's licence was suspended for three years. A conditional sentence does not involve any time in jail. Sin believes Konik and his family have suffered a lot. Sin said he does not intend to seek any compensation from Konik. “[ tecl sorry for his wife and daughter too... His wife came over (during. the trial) rgive driver and said sorry tor what her husband had done to us,” said Sin. Sin said he was close te his mother. She was visiting and had plans to return to Hong Kong at the time of her death. Sin said his family was cry: ing, to look to the future and not think about the accident. “As Jong as he doesn't commit the same thing again... I hope this gives peo- ple here a warning that they don’t drink too much before they drive, 1 think that will help, “ said Sin. Sin’s wife, Carolyne Kir Ming Lee-Sin echoed her hus- band's sentiments. “] think if this is his (Konik’s} very first time and he knows this is his fault and he will correct it afterwards, we will forgive him,” said Carolyne Kit Ming Lee-Sin. “I can’t get my mother-in- law back,” she said. Konik, who was injured in the crash, did not have any previous criminal convictions before he was charged with the fatal driving offences.
