8 ~ Sunday. April 18. 1999 ~ North Shore News Considering ye IN the past year I have noticed a great increase in the number of homeowners pur- chasing camera sys- tems for their house and property. The main reason for this is that the price has come down so itis more aftord- able. Prices range from $500 for the basic “do it yoursel!” camera and moni- ter system to $5,000 fora professionally installed, mul- tiple camera system that can be seen on your regular TV set on a special channel and is recorded 24 hours a day on atime lapse recorder. Most people seriously considering cameras have usually had things stolen or damaged around their prop- erty or are having trespass- ing probletas. A few things to remem- ber about getting a camera system: @ What do F want to see and with what clarity? This will determine what type of camera and size of lens you will need. What about night time. Do you have sufficient lighting in the area? @ Do I need a special VCR to record activities and am | repared to change tapes at east once a day? Time lapse VCRs can record for 24 hours up to a lew days and you will need several tapes that will need to be changed and possibly viewed. B Will the cameras be hid- den or visible? Do you want them to be a deterrent to safe & sound would-be crooks or are vou trying to catch someone without them knowing? @ If veu record criminal activities, are vou prepared to prosecute the offenders in “If you record criminal activities, are you prepared to prosecute the offenders in court?” court? If it's young offend- ers will they get charged or will it be just a slap on the wrist? 8 Do [need multiple cam- eras to cover all areas? How will the system handle all of these cameras? There are several different devices to handle this: switchers which switch from camera to cam- era; a quad which splits four cameras on to one screen; a multiplexer which can be programmed to pretty much anything you want. ® Colour or black and white? There are a dot of factors in getting a good camera system so be sure to ask lots of questions, The do-it-yourself pack- age probably doesn’t come with a camera housing which leaves it open to dam- age if lett outside. First, from vandalism, secondly trom the clements. A proper camera housing will have a heater and blow- er to keep it from fogging up and will be made of steel which will take quite a beat- ing if attacked. Like any- thing else, you get what you pay for and cameras are no different. Most alarm companies do this type of work so be pre- pared to do your homework on the equipment and look for brand-name quality.
