Art lessons tan diversity Kids question artists through WV program By Catherine Barr Contributing Writer THIS summer, inter- ested kids can regis- ‘ter for more than just art lessons. West Van Community Centre is offering exciting weekly programs that explore all kinds of ways to be artistic. Each week is based on a different theme and ends with a visit to a local profes- sional artist. Titles like Wizardry”, “Animation “Print and Patterns” and = “Textile Time” reveal that kids are given a unique opportunity to examine their own cre- ative abilities. Colleen Scott and Lysa Mair head up the weekly ses- sions designed for kids aged six to cight and nine to 12, Scott says the children really enjoy — themselves because “we let the kids explore in all different kinds of mediums. It’s a really fun way fo spend the summer and meet friends.” Mair agrees and adds, “ think it’s really positive for the kids to actually meet real artists.” Last week’s “Nature Art” class wrapped up with a visit to North Vancouver stone sculptor Michael Binkley. In Binkley’s unique gar- den studio, children were encouraged to touch the sculptures and discover the feel of his creations.
