On Easter Sunday he stag-
gered through the sliding door
of her townhouse apartment.
Ben fell to the couch. She
smelled gasoline. “He said, “If
we can't be together now, I'll
wait for you in heaven,”
Anna-Marie recalled.

He said he wanted to die in
her arms. She shouted to her
inother upstairs to call 9-1-1.
{n the confusion he pocketed a
vial of sleeping pills he knew
she had. He made his way
back to his car. She ran after
and jumped into the passenger
seat as he was about to pull
away. He emptied the vial. He
was too fast to stop. They
drove to Deep Cove and
parked in an abandoned lot.
She tried to talk him iato going
to Lions Gate Hospital. He
was slipping in and out of con-
sciousness. A man eventually
‘came by and told them they
couldn’t park there. She drove
straight to LGH, but Ben wres-
tled the wheel from her and
pointed the car towards
Princess Park. They parked.
She ran for help. Police and
ambulance arrived and Ben
got his ride to hospital.

Anna-Marie became
alarmed at the meeting next

_ day to discuss ben's situation
with Dr. Hassan Azim.

He wasn't really free.

When Ben didn’t show for
a meeting with Anna-Marie
late on the night he was
released from hospital, she
went looking for him. She
spotted him driving near
Grouse Mountain. She chased
and caught up, cut him off,
tried to talk to him. He placat-
ed her and then sped off to
Lions Gate Bridge. Realizing
he had tricked her she tried
again to catch up with him.
This time he would out-nun
them all. Anna-Marie called
the police.

She stayed up all night.
praying and hoping.
