4 — Wednesday, January 31, 1996 — North Shore News x-teacher faces court sentencing Testimony heard on sex charge A PSYCHOLOGIST testified in North Vancouver provincial court on Tuesday that a retired Carson Graham physics teacher was not a pedophile, but was attracted to women in their late adolescent years and early 20s. By Anna Marie 0’Angelo News Reporter “He avoids relationships with older women because they are more threatening to him,” said Robert Ley, an expert in forensic psychology. The retired teacher, Kurt M. Hueftlein, 65, pleaded guilty on Jan. 10 to sexually touching a student over a two-year period in the late 1980s. The sexual incidents involved kissing, fondling, oral sex and mas- turbation, according to earlier court evidence. .Ley was testifying during sen- tencing proceedings before Judge Bill Rodgers in North Vancouver provincial court. Ley described Hueftlein as an Our 37th Year 1.€.B.C, ° open, credible person who has dis- played extreme anguish since being charged. Ley said he has spent 30 hours in psychological assessment and treat- ment with Hueftlein since last May. Ley's report to the court about Hueftlein indicated that the teacher had been married twice. Hueftlein’s first wife was a for- mer student. Hueftlein was 38 when he first married. His second wife was the sister of a former student. Hueftlein was 48 when he mar- ried his second wife. She was 19 years younger than him. The complainant in the case was a Carson Graham student in her late teens at the time of the offence. Her identity is protected by court order. Ley said Hueftlein has had four sexual partners in his life. The psy- chologist said Hueftlein and the woman in the case were both “some- what sexually immature.” Asked Crown lawyer Bruce Cookson, “Did he know at the time what he was doing was wrong?” “Yes,” suid Ley.
