The rollers should be placed in a swirl, following the natural growth pattern of the hair, for added movement. Once hair is set, remove rollers and finger comb to soften curls or brush out to create a wave. To achieve Nancy's mid-length Friends 'do, Robathan offers some advice. Start with the right cut. Long, vertical layers —- ones that follow the curve of the head — are the key to this cut. If hair is too thick or too curly, the cut will not conform to the contours of the head, says Robsthan, and therefore not have the same effect. Back-combing is the key to achieving height and volume. Back-comb only the roots. If you comb from roots to ends you'll wind up with the frizzies, cautions Robathan. Apply a pomade like Joico's Brilliantine to the ends and fringe, to add definition and lustre. For tong-haired locks, follow tep-by step tips for Mary's upswept ‘do that looks complicated but Robathan insists isn’t. Step 1: Divide hair in two sec- tions with a part from ear to ear. Gather front section into a ponytail on top of the head, leaving a few strands around the face for soft- ness. Using a light spray like Joico's Joi Mist, spray this section. Twist the hair then secure loosely with an elastic. Tuck the ends under the elastic and secure with a small hair comb. This will create the height. Step 3: Curl loose ends with either a curling iron or rollers. Hot rollers work best. Before rolling, spray with a light hairspray. Remove curls once rollers have cooled. Secure curls in place with bobby pins. Finish with a strong- holding spray like Joico's Ice Mist. Pt. Coquitlam 942-3911 Vancouver 264-7255 Squamish 698-5252 Whistler 932-6617
