AFTER MONTHS of wran-
pling, a North Vancouver resi-
dent is getting what he wants
from ICBC.

Readers were introduced to
Arthur Schopp in last Sunday's
News.

Schopp had been negotiating
with ICBC since last fall about his
1992 Cadillac that was destroyed
wher it struck a cow on a Nevada
road in November,

Schopp maintained that he didn’t
give ICBC permission to sell his car
as salvage. He also claimed that the
$32,000 cheque the insurance com-
pany sent him in March was
nowhere near the value of his
immaculate, fully loaded Caddy.

The Cadillac had been stored. in
the winter and was used on two trips
before the fateful journey to Nevada.
The car’s mileage at mishap time
was hovering around the 16,100
kilometre mark (10.000 miles).

After months of battling over the
phone, dealing with a new adjustor
and dealing with ICBC brass. a frus-
trated Schopp concluded he would
not take less than what he had paid
for the car: $46,000.

Since the News story. ICBC offi-
cials examined Schopp’s file and
“discovered” the 69-year-old was
entitled to the new-car value for the
Caddy. Schopp had paid for limited

Said ICBC spokesman Rick
Hyde on Wednesday, “He (Schopp)
will indeed get exactly what he
wants... This points out, in part. that
if you buy special coverage, let us
know."

Schopp was unavailable for com-
ment to press time on Thursday.

Hyde said the special coverage
doesn’t show up on ICBC comput-

ers, making ita bit difficult for stat

to check if a claimant has the extra
coverage.

“When asked, he (Schopp)
always insisted he didn’t have the
coverage; in fact, he said he had
never heard of i." said Hyde.

Hyde said the insurance compa-
ny assumes clients know what they
are paying for when it comes to
extra coveraze for vehicles.

Meanwhile Ulyde said ICBC is
going to allow Schopp to maintain
his full safe-driver discount because
of the unusual circumstances sur-
rounding the mishap.

Hyde said the insurance compa-
ny made good on a third-party claim
to pay for the dead cow.

Usually, the driver involved loses
the 30% safe-driver discount when a
third-party claim is made, said
Hyde. ICBC paid the American
owner of the cow US$850, not
US$85 as reported in the earlier
News story.
