ACCORDING TO a recent repart
from Anight-Ridder News Service,
suuport groups are trying to foster
public awareness of hyperucusis, a
condition in which a person hears
every small sound magnified to
unpleasant levels. One man
described in the story wears
earplugs and industrial-strength
earmuffs outside and keeps the
refrigerator in his garage because
he finds the hum = unbearable.
Another man with the ailment sits
in his car while his home air con-
ditioner cools the house, The
sound of the unit, he said, is too
much to bear.

In April, ‘The Sun newspaper in
London, ‘England reported that
machinist Craig Eames, who had
recently experienced constant
earaches, was completely cured
when doctors removed a pregnant
spider that had been nesting in his
ear. Eames reportedly now wears
earplugs when he sleeps, to pre-
vent another incident, and has
grown fond of the spider which he
now keeps as a pet.

Professor’ Lance’ Workman of
Glamorgan University near Car-
diff, Wales, reported in April that
his research, using a sonograph,
shows that robins found’ around
Sussex. chirp in a different dialect
(including pitch, lilt and intona-
tion) than robins found in Wales.
He also found that each. robin
assumes a defensive posture when
exposed to the chirping of the
other region’s robins.

Not Weird, but good, news,
Community members turned out
in record numbers to assist with
the Maplewood Flats cleanup on
June 5. One hundred volunteers
of all ages helped to clear the
western edge of the salt marsh
located at the southern end of
Park Street, North Vancouver. In
total 35 cubic yards (one. large
dumpster full) of wood debris,
and eight cubic yards (one small
dumpster full) of miscellaneous
garbage items, including one toilet
bowl, a half dozen tires and bits
of plastic and glass etc. were col-
lected. Also, 12 purple martin
nesting boxes were installed on ex-
isting poling in Burrard Inlet at

. low tide, in the eastern section of

the flats.

The U.S. Navy is currently testing
a boat paint, developed by Pitts-
burgh inventor Ken Fischer, that
combines cayenne pepper oi] (so
hot it will blister fingers) with
epoxy-based paint to give bar-
nacles such pain that they will not
attach to the hulls of ships.
