In ‘other words, health was seen as the absence of illness and disease. Over the last two decades this perception of health has been shi into a more positive concept that includes many aspects of a person's life. A Change in Health - Health used to be seen as a care service provided by pro- t fessionals who have medical training (e.g. doctors and - muses). More recently, however, sccial and community factors, as well as'‘individual behaviour have been recog- . nized as playing a significant role in the formation of a their community to find out what works best in their lives. In the words of Susan Berlin from the report “Healthy Families in Healthy Communities”: : “People work best, lear best, and in the broadest . sense of the word are ‘healthiest’ when they have control over the conditions that affect © their lives.” ; ok Extemally, we are reaching out to the community to heip you get the programs, tools, and profession- al help you need. This report is part of thisnew - process. In past years we have printed an annual report that states “what we did” in a traditional ” business/financial format. This time we have taken a brand new approach. ° : * person's health. The community you live in, the environ- “ment, your family, genetics, your jab, individual stress, ’ lifestyle, beliefs, all are factors that may directly contribute _ to your state of health. This shift in the concept of health is not meant to negate ‘or undernine the importance of medical services in the treatment of illness. Rather, the shift is a recognition that a broader perspective on health is required if we are to fully understand the fac- ° tons thar contribute to good health, and linkages between medical care, com- : _ munity care; self care and the heaith status of a community. Today’ s Health Shift Recognising that many factors contribute to good health, North Shore Health is in the process of changing to improve the health status of the community and | ts ; members.
