Lyme Borreliosis Society, a registered charitable organization, recently an- nounced that the 47th In- ternationai Northwestern Conference on Diseases in Nature Communicable to Man will be held in Van- couver from Sunday, Aug.16 to Wednesday, Aug. 19. The purpose of the Society, which is a North Shore group, is to offer support and education to ‘the public and health-care profes- sionals about tick-related illnesses. A free public forum on lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the University of British Columbia Conference Centre, located at 5961 Student Union Blvd., Van- couver. . The panelists for the meeting include Dr. discoverer of the lyme bacteria, and other distinguished scientists, researchers and doctors who will be making short presentations followed by a question-and-answer period. Lyme. disease has been dubbed the “great imitator’’and can mimic various serious diseases. The society’s president, Diane Kindress, says: ‘‘There are many serious . diseases transmitted by ticks, but the one that has receiv- ed the most recent coverage is lyme disease. Lyme disease is a reportable disease in 49 states in the United States of America, in- cluding Washington, Oregon and California.** Kindress says that the organiza- tion, apart from offering support and education services, has been actively involved in collecting ticks from all over British Columbia for research purposes. In_ addition, Kindress says the ° Organization has raised funding to support the cuituring, isolation and identification of bacteria. “Our long-range goal is to raise funds to support continued research into tick-borne illnesses. There are over 20 different species of ticks in British Columbia that need to be thoroughly studied.”” People who are interested in fearning more about tick-trans- mitted diseases, how to guard against tick bites, or what to do if bitten, are invited to attend the meeting on Sunday, Aug. 16. For more information call Diane Kindress at 922-3704 or John Fowle at 987-8343. Willy Burgdorfer,- CHILCOTIN Saddle up!
