Lions gear up for the 1992 season and get ready for action the starting role that was cut short by a knee injury. He suffered an injury to his other knee in mid- October of 1987 and was forced to sit out the balance of the season. He played his freshman season at Simon Fraser University then spent his sophomore year at Golden West J.C. in California before go- ing to play at Arizona. A back-up in his junior year, he red-shirted the 1980 season after an injury in spring practice, then returned in 1983 as a starter with the Pac-]0 Wildcats. Leo Groenewegen Offensive Linemun Groenewegen enjoyed the finest season of his career in 199 help- ing anchor one of the best offen- sive lines in the CFL, as he and his teammates aliowed a league- low 30 sacks. In fact, Groenewegen perform- ed so weli he carned his first all- star rating when he was named to both the western all-star team and CFL all-star team. He started at right guard in all 18 games, bringing his career total up to 42 games played with the Lions and 90 in total] in the CFL. Groenewegen joined the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1987 as the first player taken in the CFL college draft. He started in every game while with the Rough Riders -- 18 in 1987 and 18 in 1988 and 12 in 1989 -— before being traded to B.C. from Ottawa for Roper. His first complete season with the Lions was 1990 and the Van- couver native performed superbly. Groenewegen fas four career fumble recoveries and six defen- sive tackles. In 1987, he was one of two Canadians who competed in the East-West Shrine Game at Palo Alto, Califernia. one Matt Clark Slesvack Entering training camp as third string slotback, Clark soon found himself starting and dida’t disap- point the coaches, finishing the year as the team’s second-leading ceceiver and third only to Calgary’s Allen Pitts and Ray Alexander in the CFL. Clark hauled in 79 for 1,530 yards and {0 touchdowns, breaking Mervyn Fernandez’ league record for yards. receiving by a first-year player. He was one of the stars of the Grizziies’ potent passing offerce during his career at Montana. Ai- though he was hurt for four games in 1990, Clark still caught 30 passes for 399 yards and one touchdown. He ranked third in all-time Grizzly receiving yardage with 133 receptions for 1,639 yards. In 1989 he was fifth in the Big Sky Conference in receiving yard- age (588) and 17th in the nation with 3.5 catches per game. Clark provided the tcam with much-needed stability as 2 long snapper, enabling Lui Passaglia to receptions enjoy the second-best kicking year of his career. He piayed in all 18 games, backing up as outside linebacker as well as performing his long- snapping duties, and finished the year with six special teams tackles. An excellent Jong-snapper, Clark was aiso an Olympic weightlifter and earned a Silver Medal in the i987 Canada Games. In all his games with the Thunderbirds, including the Vanicr Cup Champions in 1986, he never produced a bad snap and with his versatility as a linebacker and excellent special teams piayer, Clark gives the Lions reliability in oae of the most vital areas of football. fan Sinclair Defensive Lineman The popular centre had another fine season, anchoring one of the best offensive lines in the CFL. Sinclair played in all 18 regular- season games. He was selected in the first round of the 1984 draft by Mon- treal, but chose to start another year at centre for the University of Miami Hurricanes. Sinclair then signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 1985. The Lions traded for his rights, giving up Rick Ryan in the ’85 season. After Siuclair’s release by the Colts, he joined the Lions and played in the final five games. In the past five seasons, he has played all 95 regular-season games.
