The unique event is set for noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 9 at Mahon Park in North Vancouver Chy. Said North Vancouver City Fire Department Inspector David Burgess, “We've always provided children’s entertainment, but this year we're concentrating on mak- ing it a family fair, We're trying to put back into the community activities that families can enjoy."” The kids’ area will be located at the north end of Mahon Park near the waterpark in a fenced-off area. Play in the waterpark area will be monitored by a profes- sional lifeguard. Children wili be able to enjoy Kidsart, a creative hat-making workshop. Balloons will be handed out by North Shore firefighters and par- ticipants of the North Shore Firefighters Senior Girls Basket- ball Tournament. Festival-goers will be able to take free rides in a vintage fire truck. Facepainters and musician Joey Hanlon (brother of North Van- couver City Fire Department firefighter Bob Hanlon) round out the children’s entertainment. Meanwhile, local firefighters annually invite festival participa- tion by fire departments from all over the province. The competi- tion is limited to 12 fire depart- ments, This year Greater Vancouver Regional District fire departments and a contingent from Whistler will attend. The competitive component of the festival includes volleyball games, a water tower bucket brigade race and an antique hose reel race in which teams of six firefighters cum a hose reel rig around a track. Burgess says future festivals will focus more on fire awareness education. This year a fire equipment and rescue demonstration will include the fire safety house, a fire engine truck and a 400-foot aerial plat- form truck. The festival includes a “refreshment garden."’ Stee! drum band Soul Survivors will provide musical entertainment while members of the public refresh themselves. Overwaitea Foods will donate food that will be sold) by the firefighters to raise money for the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, the Vancouver General Hospital Burn Fund, the North Shore Rescue Team and the North Shore Firefighters Senior Girls Basket- ball Tournanment. The Canadian Progress Club will be on hand to sell ice cream. Proceeds are donated to the fund- raising effort. Last year the festival raised ap- proximately $20,000. The event, which takes place rain or shine, begins with a parade at 10:30 a.m. The parade route takes in Lonsdale Avenue from Keith Road to 17th Street and from 17th Street to Mahon Park. A post-Hose Reel Festival dance is scheduled for the Mickey McDougall Recreation Centre located at 123 East 23rd St. in North Vancouver. The dance is hosted by the North Shore Police and Fire World Games Commit- tee. Tickets are available at local fire halls or at Mahon Park on Saturday.
