' THE UNIVERSAL feeling
about vacations is that they
are over much too quickly.

Before we know it we're back

into the routine of everyday life
_and the holiday becomes a distant

> ‘memory.

But these memories can be
revived with the help of some
good photographs that capture the
essence of the experience.

Holidays are wonderful times to
photograph new and unique
places, people and situations in a
relaxed atmosphere.

And although we embark on
vacations with the best intentions

_ of taking some priceless pictures,
often our cameras become prey to

-a@ common virus known as ‘the
hotel syndrome.

‘You can tell when someone has
been hit with this disease when
you hear the well-worn phrase,

“Pve got to come back later with.

my camera.’’

’ And then later, ‘‘maybe tomor-
row after we go shopping’’ and
finally at the airport heading
home, ‘‘oh dear, we better get
some postcards.”

Our neglected friend, the cam-
era, is discovered upon unpacking
and we are left with regrets in-
~ stead of memories.

Even when we do remember to
take photographs, it’s often
months after the last holiday be-
fore the film is developed.

And even then the results may

- .be Jess than inspiring. Maybe they
were overexposed, too far away,
or the cap was still on the lens.

The photos are not only a great
memento of your vacation, they
also become a part of the fun
while you are there.

Simple Tips

Keep in mind a few simple tips
that will enable you to take better
pictures.
® Move in close to your subject
and don’t try to include too much
from too far away. .

Instead, focus on interesting
details or unusual angles for more
dramatic results.

@ Remeinber to travel with at
least twice as much film as you
anticipate shooting.

You never know if film will be
readily available once you are
there or if it will be reasonably
priced.

@ To avoid harsh shadows when
photographing people on a sunny
day, use fill-in flash or a camera
with a built-in programmed flzsh.
® Often the best photographic
subjects.are people; but remember
to depict their character as it is,
rather than pose them.

The easiest way to do this is to
say ‘I'd like to take a picture of
you, but please carry on with
what you're doing.”’

Instead of returning home from
this year’s vacation with just
memories and the back to work
blues, you will have a great set of
vacation photos to share with
your friends and remind you that,
yes, you did just have a wonderful
and relaxing vacation no matter
how short it seemed.
