The reason for bicycle racing's
popular longevity in Europe
plied, though not specifically
stated: the bike has continuously
remained a common form of
working-class transportation in
Europe while North Americans are
only rediscovering it after a long
ecologically disastrous love-affair
with the interna! combustion
engine.

Naturally we've re-merchandis-
ed it and made it expensive, but to
European kids the bike symbolizes
mobility and freedom as much as
a learner's permit and a rusted-out
Acadian did for us, and while we
dreamed of building stock cars
and dragsters, they rode in local
amateur bike races like the
“kermesses” still held in
Belgium.

Though it occurred early in the
19th century, the invention of the
bicycle is as much a mystery as the
domestication of the horse, but .t’s
an even money bet that the firs:

stage a race.
