Drivers face roadside testing

LOCAL POLICE are calling the
hand-held breath tester a ‘‘big
success.”*

The device was recently in-
troduced by local police depart-
ments to identify drinking drivers.

Equipped with the road-side
screening devices (RSDs), police
reportedly detected and charged
close to a third more drinking
drivers per vehicle stopped this
year than without the devices dur-
ing last year’s Christmas
CounterAttack campaign.

driving are tested at road checks.
Drinking drivers may face road-
side suspensions, fines and jail
terms. Drivers refusing to provide
a breath sample face the same
penalties for being impaired: a
minimum one-year driving pro-
hibition plus a $300 fine, to a
maximum $2,000 fine and six
months in jail.
