MAILBOX a | North Shore is prepared for quake Dear Editor: As Chairman of the North & West Vancouver Emergency Pro- gram (NWVEP) Executive Com- mittee, I wish to publicly respond to your editorial of Feb. 27. I agree with the need for a pro- active approach to emergency plans, and this is the direction taken by the three North Shore municipalities under the coordina- tion of the NWVEP. The municipalities are plementing a_ three-year plan, which includes steps for risk assessment and mitigation, needed exercises and training, emergency social services and public informa- ‘tion. Through these measures we hope to be second to none in our preparedness for a large, damag- ing earthquake in the future. The Emergency Program’s public information program has been very active over the past two im- in building an increased awareness of the earthquake hazard and the need for preparedness by residents, schools, care facilities, and the business community. This is important because, even with the best response procedures by our municipalities, how well our community as a whole sur- vives a large earthquake will de- pend on the individual preparedness of the public and in- stitutions to cope on their own for a 72-hour period until professional help arrives. To heighten awareness, the Emergency Program, through the efforts of Ross Peterson and Laurie Bean, has been involved in many meetings with the public. service clubs, schools, chambers of commerce, and care facilities on the North Shore. Do not forget that starting with pemmican, we now have mocha parfait, roast beef, short-bread, lasagna, goulash, and won ton. Do not’ forget settlers fed by the Indians, the neighborhood barn- raising or the Terry Fox Run. You cannot separate like an iceberg and drift off into the Atlantic. We live beside each other. You are not going to move. We are not going to move. Yet you draw your house of sharpened fleur-de-lys about you and impale any who do not speak French. No longer do you wish to eat the Indian gift of food or help with the barn-raising. You are afraid! You are afraid you will lose your mocha parfait. But if you share, you will not lose it. With so many delicacies offered around you these past two hundred years, have you not improved the recipe? Let us all sit at the table. Canada is not your home. Canada is not my home. Canada is our home and native land. Jean Pope North Vancouver News’ Mailbox policy LETTERS TO the editor must in- clude your name, written legibly, your full address and telephone number.
