I observed that hoiding a cam- corder seems to inspire a Cecil B. DeMille syndrome which allows one to violate common audience courtesy rules by 1) standing up in one’s seat and blocking the view of those behind, 2) roaming around during the ceremonies and causing general distraction, and 3) walking to the anid of the audience and standing By the middie of the ceremonies, the place vas in chaos. Half the seets were empty, although ‘‘tagg- ed’’ with programs, and people were jostling ia the ailses for better views. DEAR MISS MANNERS — My wife chided me a few evenings ago. It's not the first time, but [I'm still struggling to recover. Our family had just sat down to enjoy the evening meal when there was a knock 3 the front door. I went there, accompanied by my two daughters. Upon seeing through the window two young mes I did nof know, I sought to PRESENTS © Saturday Night accommodation © an afternoon Wildlife Cruise © a performance of one of four exceptional plays * a sumptuous Sunday morning brunch Package 1 — Starting from $188/couple «a lunch at a seaside restaurant © a matinee of one of four exceptional plays ¢ tea, coffee and pastries with the cast Package 2 — Starting from $49.95/Couple set an example of caution for my children, so rather than opening the door, I asked them through the window how I might be of assistance. They responded that they wanted me to sign a petition about some environmental issue. Now, you must understand, Miss Man- ners, I am a champion of en- vironmental causes. I compost grass clippings and recycle news- papers. But I was hungry, my din- ner was quickly becoming cold, and I didn’t want to chat about acid rain. I therefore responded — with a disappointed half-smile, as you suggest — “‘I don’t believe we'll be interested.” The young man responded in a scolding tone, ‘‘Is there a reason?’”’ I answered “*Yes,"? and returned to the table to eat. My wife believes I set an exam- ple of rudeness for my children. GENTLE READER — Miss Manners trusts that your wife didn’t chide you in front of your children, thus setting them a bad example about respect. As for the rest of the incident, she is almost entirely cn your side. The lesson you have taught your children is not only not to open doors to stranges, but not to allow unauthorized intrusions to disrupt your private life.
