Baths, kitchens need special lighting HAVE YOU thought of how much we use our kitchens and bathrooms? In the kitchen we chop vegetables, wash dishes, search the cupboards for baking soda, saute Onions, sip wine, eat hearty and chat with friends. In the bathroom we weigh ~ ourselves, shower, shave, gargle, brush our hair, do our makeup and relax in our whirlpool. That is why the lighting in these rooms must be versatile: bright enough so we can see to do our daily chores and subtle enough to accommo- date more leisurely moments. The lighting scheme of a kitchen or bathroom depends greatly on the ceiling height, size, shape and color of the room. Color and tex- ture play an important role in determining the amount of wattage and fixtures needed. **A kitchen with dark wood cab- inetry or a bathroom done in black marble will need much more ex- tensive lighting than rooms done in white gloss or pastel shades,’’ says Peter van der Harst, lighting con- sultant for a leading lighting com- pany. In the kitchen, specifically, a combination of shadow-free gen- eral lighting and task lighting over countertops and work areas is needed. Under-cabinet fluorescent strip lights are ideal for lighting counter areas. Select a type, possibly a warm white, that is designed for good color rendering, bringing out the true color of food and creating a warm, cosy at- mosphere. Fluorescents come in many dif- ferent sizes. For smaller areas, such as an appliance garage, the newest compact plug-in fluorescent lights with a swivel reflector are ideal. Task lighting can also be provided by suspended tubular fluorescent fixtures over the sink, the range, or other work islands. As a general light source, fluorescents are best suited to kitchens with high ceilings. A ceil- See Bathrooms Page 21 im 153 West 3rd St., NVancouver S 9 ; xO .
