By STEPHEN BARRINGTG News Reporter Usually running around the park seawall, five runners from the local World Runners Canada club will be taking a different path in the Soviet Union next month for an international money- and awareness-raising marathon. “We feel as individuals we can make a difference,’’ said the club’s Mike Gannon, 25, who leaves Aug. 9 for the Moscow Interna- tional Peace Marathon. “And it’s not hard to make a difference, you just have to make an effort.”* Joining Gannon in running for world hunger will be fellow club members Les Chimko, 25, Graeme Drew, 28, Brigitte Drew, 24, and Cheryl Verney, 33. Founded internationally in 1978, World Runners has raised more than US $3.5 million for projects with such groups as UNICEF, CARE and the Red Cross. Before leaving for Moscow as the first Canadian contingent to participate in the annual event, the focal runners hope to raise $50,000, a portion of which will be used for the group’s travelling ex- penses, with the remainder being funnelled through World Runners to local projects such as the Food Bank.
