By ANNELIES RAVENSBERGEN Contributing Writer Teacher Kit Krieger, who has taught at West Van's Sentinel Sec- ondary School for 15 years, initi- ated the program. It grew out of his friendship with Yoshiro Goto, a Japanese industrialist, whose son lived in Canada for seven years, Krieger said. “He believes the Japanese will benefit by becoming more cosmopolitan,’’ he said, adding that the Japanese society is very homogenous, In 1981, the first exchange took place, and was repeated in 1985 and 1986. The West Vancouver students visit Japan in the fall, while the Japanese pay their return visit in the spring. The students ‘stay with each others’ families to experience the other lifestyle. The Japanese students arrived in Vancouver March 22 for their two-week visit. “The Japanese students seem pleased to be here and re-establish the friendships,’’ Krieger said. He said they comment on the scenic beauty and spaciousness. -The Japanese students attend school at Sentinel for a few days, then visit the legislature in Vic- toria, tour the city and visit museums. Krieger said the language can be a problem. ‘‘The Japanese learn English the way we learn French,”’ Krieger said, adding that the stu- dents communicate in international sign language. Krieger said the Canadian stu- dents ‘‘loved the home-stay pro- gram’ in Japan. To quatify the Sentinel students need to meet the academic requirements and attend 40 hours of pre-departure prepara- tion, Krieger said. ‘‘They have an expectation when they go, we don’t throw them cold turkey,’’ he said. The primary goal of the pro- gram is to highlight the Japanese culture, and to become intimate with the Japanese lifestyle, Krieger said, Last year’s trip included a visit to Tokyo and Hiroshima. The program aiso aims at long- term exchanges. Fifteen-year-old Masatka Taki will be the first full-year student to attend Sen- tinel. He will arrive chis fall and board with a local family. Taki has visited the North Shore on a previous exchange and has a good command of the English lan- guage, Krieger said. The exchange program is spreading to other West Vancouver schools. ‘‘West Vancouver Sec- ondary will send its first group this fall’ nents, an eight-month segment of intensive courses in Pacific and Asian Studies which includes lan- guage and culture, and a four-to- 12 month cooperative work term to provide on-the-job experience in Canada or overseas. Career targets include such areas as finance, international marketi- ng, development, applied techno- logy, education, planning and government and non-government agencies. Canadian export is shifting to the west. In 1985 Canada’s exports to the Asia Pacific region were valued at $10 billion, of which $4 billion was generated by B.C. That same year, $8 billion was exoorted to Europe, with only $1.3 billion of that total from B.C., statistics show. “We have had this program in the planning stages for five years THURSDAY APRIL 2nd PATTERNS ii ci 115cm POLY-COTTON BROADCLOTH (COUPON EXPIRES APRIL 5. 1987) COUPON GOUPGR HPN COUPON COUPOK COUPON COUPON COUPON COUPON COUPON == OFF ANY REG. Education about the economics, politics, geography, cultures and social and business aspects of the Pacific Basin is needed, he said. “We expect to see the program launch a number of successful new careers, but even more important, we feel that we will be contributing to Canada’s development hy in- creasing the effectiveness of the people who represent Our country’s interests overseas,’’ he said. The one-year program is aimed at university graduates and business people who are looking at an international career. The pro- gram will start this fall and is funded by the federal and provin- cial governnients.
