Soccer Association's inaugural Sum- mer Soccer Academies in July. — Offered for the first time bythe B.C.S.A., the Summer Soccer Academy is a project designed to provide boys 12-16 years of age with an op- portunity to receive top notch coaching in a residential set- ting at Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island. B.C. Soccer Association Director of Coaching Alan Churchard will act as camp director and one of the in- Structors at the soccer schools. Says Churchard: ‘“‘We have established a province-wide non- residential soccer school pro- gram which annually caters to some 10,000 boys and girls in July and August. The Canada-Safeway/Coca Cola schools are a low-cost mass participation program that nearly everyone can afford to attend. In 1982 we launched the annual International Soc- cer School that we now offer every year in England. The Soccer Academy at Shawnigan Lake is designed to bridge the gap between the two. The Academy consists of two, week-long, hve-in pro- grams. Players have the choice of attending the Academy July !-6 or July 8-13. Each week-long course is limited to 60 participants and the ratio of coach to player will be 1:10. Registrants will also receive and get to keep an Academy leisure shirt and hand sewn leather soccer ball. Adds Churchard: ‘‘There are a number of people in the seccer community who run resideatial soccer schools during the summer.
