If necessary, they will arrange a tow, see to the shipping of necessary parts or even assist in finding overnight accommodation. If a road call is warranted and the car is within 30 miles of the participating dealer- ship, the dispatcher will use an electronic pager to reach the technician serving the area and put him in contact with the motorist. The company isn’t reacting to - or expecting - a torrent of calls, however. ‘‘The pro- gram is only practical because of the basic reliabili- ty of the cars’’, said Mr. Ranjer M. Lange-Mechlen, President of Mercedes-Benz Canada Inc. “Our experience in the pilot programs has been that fewer than two percent of the owners call on the service in a year, and more than half of those problems are resolved over the phone’’, he added. ‘*The users of the Roadside Assistance though have been enthusiastic. Ninety-three percent of those who have utilized the service report it has met or exceeded their expectations.’’ The program was begun on a test basis in the metropolitan New York area in November 1981. Based on positive results, it was ex- panded to include the balance of New York, New Jersey, New England and Southern California and Arizona in 1982-83. The service was im- plemented in eastern Canada in early 1984 and is now available to Greater Van- couver Mercedes-Benz owners. The road calls are made by dealer technicians using specially outfitted, blue-and- white Mercedes 300TD sta- tion wagons. In addition to the tools most likely to be needed, the wagons carry an array of parts ranging from spare batteries to engine belts and hoses. lt may not be as dramatic as having the cavalry riding Tips on safe city cycling As a result of the transit disruption, many people are riding their bicycles to work and play.
