ICB Dear Editor Does B.C.have a truth-in- advertising code? An ad plac- ed by the Office & Technical Employees Union (‘‘Even Socreds agree. Private In- surance | Can’t Do It Better’) ‘in your January 1 Edition was at best misleading and at worst an outright lie. My current insurance Fore Dear Editor . Please accept this letter 2 as a reply to your editorial, **Credibility Gap”’’, publish- ed in your December 18 issue. The request to withhold a Signature to the new fore- shore lease was in order that the ‘‘Combined Ratepayers Committee’’ could obtain from the Council informa- tion on the lease and to allow an opportunity for some public input. The Council, in its wisdom, declined. For your information (which was available to your Editor if he had inquired), we submit the following: Fact 1: The Squamish Peo- Alberta is $106 (6 month policy). ICBC quoted me about twice as much for the same coverage. As a soon-to- be resident of B.C. 1 stand to lose from what Angus Ree calls ‘“‘effective and. effi- cient’. It’s a moral tragedy that B.C: residents are forced to buy a product (and from one company tao), but when will have to negotiate were not aware of the new lease from the signing authorities or how it would affect them.. Fact 2; re was no clause in the lease for appeal by the upland foreshore owners. -Fact 3: There waSno clause in the lease for adver- tising applications for future sub-leases. Fact 4: There was no clause in the lease for public hearings on applications. (However the Committee went to the Ministry of Lands, Parks and Housing, which concurred with the draperies by S. A private citizen who tried this in the 1920s was jailed. (Yes, Virginia, Al Capone is alive and well 2 and he works at ICBC.) Contrary to what the ad states, Crown corporations are almost always less effi- cient than private companies. If indeed ICBC were as good observations on: the afore- mentioned omissions from the lease and will withhold signing the lease.) Some questions which need answering are: 1. What are the reasons for the Municipality taking on the administration of the waterfront sub-leases? 2. Have the property owners been advised? 3. Who will pay for the legal surveys? 4. Who will set the value of as the ad implies then there would be no need for it to hide behind its monopoly, - because it-wWould survive in the free market. The ad should better have been titled “Even Consumers agree ... Private Insurance Does Do It Better.” Bob Story Vancouver shore lease queried . ple with whom the Council the improvements? . ‘S$. What are the estimated costs of administering the 30-year lease? 6. What are the estimated net returns to the Municipality? — We concur that there is a ‘Credibility Gap’’ but it is not with the Combined Rate- payers Committee. ¥.H. Like many people, I always start the new year full of good intentions; five miles jogging three times a week: let- ters to friends overseas more regularly and finish that novel that’s been lying half completed in a drawer for ages. And like most of those many, I find myself making those same resolutions 12 months later!: : Changing one’s way of life in any way is not easy. How many of you reading this have ended up convincing yourselves that those changes you were contemplating just weren't really necessary? “My Grandfather smoked tll he was 90 and néver had a day’s sickness in his life . Who knows if we'll even be around this time next year . . All my family tend to be a bit on the heavy side, it's in the genes!” Many of you I suspect. Dan Rutley, Director of D. Rutley & Associates, uses hypnosis to help his clients create better habits. In hyp- nosis, the persuasive arguments of the conscious mind (the will) are by-passed and new programs can be planted in the subconscious. The subconscious controls our bodi- ly functionis. For example, if we feel a sneeze.coming on we automatically grab a Kleenex and do the necessary. We do so unquestioningly without any “conscious” thought’. . . like lighting a cigarette because it’s the mid moming coffee break, or stuffing ourselves with Peanuts as we sip a cocktail! In hypnosis a person becomes very relaxed. Sugges- tions that are given are more readily accepted by the sub- conscious without having to undergo the critical evalua- thon and pre-screening of “Head Office” — the conscious mind. After the appropriate suggestions have been given, the client who smokes will not feel like a cigarette, the com- pulsive eater not hungry and the quiet timid individual far more confident than they have been in years. These suggestions are compounded by the client at home through self-hypnosis and at further sessions until the new habit becomes a reality. D. Rutley and Associates have helped many people through counselling and hypnosis overcome a wide varie- ty of problems ranging from smoking and obestty to migraines and stuttering, from depression and anger to tn. somnia and pain control. More and more busy doctors on the lower mainland are referring patients to them and some women have used self hypnosis to make their pregnancy more pleasurable. Hypnosis ts not without tts limitations and ts certainly not the ultimate panacea. But it has and can help many people change thetr way of life for the better, as well as ex tend it 1984 has only just begun If you're having difficulty keeping those promises you made just a few days ago or need help getting started, why not give D Rutley and Associates a call and ask for a free consultation They've helped many people help themselves already Ordinary people. just like you and me D.
