Rebuts ‘Solidarity’ tag Dear Editor: It was with astonishment that | read your editorial of October 9. Criticism I am willing to accept but not when it ts based on misinformation. Fortunately the council meeting was taped and the facts are that the municipal Community Services Advisory Commission’s recommendations regarding the effect on services and financial implications in West Vancouver of provincial legislation, made to council several weeks ago, were on the agenda to be received on October 3 at which time I introduced the subject by saying: **1 am sure that I reflect the thinking of the whole council when | say that we feel that party politics have no place in municipal affairs. Neither do we feel that municipalities should try to tell the provincial government how to run provincial affairs. We know that they have serious problems regarding lack of funds. We recognize and endorse the need for constraint at all levels of government. However, where restraint is to be practised provides alternatives. And as mayor and aldermen elected to look after the interests of the people of West Vancouver, it behooves us to speak out when the welfare of our people is adversely affected — especially when it is the elderly, the sick and the disadvantaged.’’ My motion as approved by council was as follows: ‘“*That Mayor D. Humphreys be requested to write to the Premier, with copies to the appropriate ministers and our MLA, regarding the provincial budget, stating the council of West Vancouver’s position as follows: “‘1. The council recognizes the financial constraints under which the province is currently operating and will be for the next few years until resource and other revenues rise. **2. The council recognizes that in times such as these there must be a re-allocation of provincial funds and a Trepriorizing of provincial services. **3. Council expresses its concern that the reduction in some of the human resource programmes and funding in this area may cause hardship and may cause an immediate Ban rubbish burning Dear Editor: Well here we are again — beautiful fall weather only to be clouded up by smoke com- ing from a smoldering mass of garbage from my neighbor’s yard.
