September 24, 1980 Hospital volunteer At some time or another, everyone of us has felt the anguish of loneliness, but few of us have ever been as isolated from the outside world as some of the residents at Lions Gate Hospital E.C.U. Lions Gate Hospital is resuming its special Volunteer Visitor Program which has been so successful in previous years. This special volunteer programme was designed in order to combat the isolation that some pcople feel in hospital. Certain medical problems require patients to stay in hospital for a long period of convalescence, while other people are permanent residents in the Extended Care Unit Some of these paticats’ visitors needed have very few visitors and there are some who have no visitors at all coming to sce them. The search is on for warm, cnthusiastic people who are willing to give a small portion of their time cach weck to be a friend to a hospital resident. A basic 4-week training course will be given to all volunteers at Lions Gate Hospital in the Boarrdroom, E.C.U. Basement Level on Wednesday, October 1, October 8, October 22 and October 29 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on cach occasion. People who enjoy talking to others, reading the newspapers, discussing current events, writing letters, sharing hobbies, would be very good special volunteers Caring about people is the only special skill required.
