C6-Wednesday, May 7, 1980 - North Shore News TIPS FOR THE TRAVELLERS From Great Snoring to crime in Rio Thanks to a local reader, Ray Eagle, I've been en- joying an English magazine, “This England.” Although the magazine is not a “travel publication,” it does focus on different areas of Britain each tssue. I'd call it more of a literary-historical magazine and readers who enjoy British history and Doetry may find it useful in planning a visit. “It appears quarterly and may be ordered by sending a STS cheque to: This England, P.O. Box 52, Cheltenham, Gloucester- shire, U.K. Before you spend fifteen bucks, have a look at your local library and see if they have any copies. If you make a written request, the librarian will often order a subscription for library use. You don't have to own something to enjoy it! The classified section of the magazine contains a lot of interesting rentai Properties and hotels — some in London but the majority in rural settings such as the Cardigan Coast of Wales, “Mousehole” and “Great Snoring.” ees DEAR BARBARA: Am I a nut? I hate using any sort of hotel bathtub, thinking of all the others who have used it before and guessing the maids might not clean it properly. Can you get diseases from dirty tubs? ANSWER: I have a sneaking hunch that you can get more diseases from avoiding baths! Ive got to admit, though, I prefer using public showers to public tubs. On a couple of occasions, I've borrowed the cleanser from the maid's cart and cleaned the thing myself — especially after I caught one “maid” cleaning our bathtub with the toilet brush’ DEAR BARBARA: You are SO right about all those cruise tips. We had a bad “criticizer” in our group of themselves four and what a drag! Of course, she got sick too. One thing you didn't mention was to take a Gravol tablet as soon as you embark and lie down for half an hour. Two of did this and had no problems. Guess who didn't? ANSWER: Sorry you drew a dud as a travel companion. That’s why it’s often better to travel with family if you can. They may be “duds” but at least it comes as no surprize. trayel- wise by Barbara McCreadie I don’t recommend taking Gravol because so _ few people get sick on cruises that it is usually un- necessary. Also, I believe that “No medicine is the best medicine.” Gravol, too, has side effects such as drowsiness for some people. 1 don’t know what the effects are if you mix it with alcohol but IT sure wouldn't want to find out the hard way. DEAR BARBARA: Have you any information on a guide for nude swimming and sunbathing in Europe? I understand that there are many beaches where it is legal and we'd like to visit some of these. ANSWER: Since I gave up nude sunbathing at about two years of age, this hasn't been an area of travel that I've explored. Some countries do have beaches of this type but I haven't a clue where you'd find up-to-date information. Perhaps your friendly neighborhood nudist colony might be able to steer you in the right direction. A word of caution, however. European “legalities” have a habit of changing without warning and it wouldn't do to be “caught down,” so to speak. After two days he got so sick of soup that we had to do something. Finally, the druggist patched them together with the local equivalent of “Crazy Glue” and he was back to a normal diet. ANSWER: That was just a small problem compared to another reader who lost his, along with his lunch, over the side of a cruise ship! DEAR BARBARA: Did you read that recent article in the daily paper on crime in Rio? We were planning a visit there next winter and are now having second thoughts. Can we have your opinion, please? ANSWER: I read it with dismay! Travel in any under- developed country carries it’s share of risks — starving people haven't much to lose and crime proliferates. It would be a shame if Canadians missed the opportunity to see one of the most beautiful cities in the world because of criminals. Carry nothing of value in the way of jewellery — leave your diamond ring and expensive watch at home. Keep your money in travellers’ cheques and cash only small denominations at one time. Stay in better hotels and lock your cheques in the safety deposit box at night. Don’t wander: around seamy areas after dark.
