There is more than a touch of irony in the fact that the Olympic Torch, presently on its way to Lake Placid is the first ever to be in the United States, and by the way the Americans are pressuring for the politicizing of the games, quite possibly the last one ever. And the irony is also noticeable by the pomp and circumstance in every hamlet where the torch passes. There is a tradition going back thousands of years with this torch that captures the imagination of all who see it. “the With the world once again dividing into war camps and propoganda arsenals already firing great salvos at each other it is sad to see the message of the torch being missed by the politicians who see war, or the threat of it, as being more ad- : £s |‘ RA COR. v D> omer Yeas Produced in aid of Conservation by Canadian National Sportsmen's Shows | by Andy Fraser ncouraging isn’t it? ee ed Oe, 2 Ps vantageous than learning to live with each other. Yes, and even the so- called ‘sports’ writers are managing to get into the act. In a recent column ep- titled ‘Sports Probe’ the columnist, one Steve K. Walz, talks about the up- coming Olympic Hockey tournament. We quote: . ‘Most of the Russian National Team hockey players who are expected to win the gold medal, play back home for a team called Central Red Army. Whether it’s shooting pucks or bullets, it doesn’t matter to those ‘athletes’ as long as_ it benefits the ‘revolution’.’ And in another column he says ‘This will be a war on ice.’ 1 It is this type of statement that creates hate. For a _ so- called sports reporter to even think that way shows a total lack of knowledge, or concern of sport and the athletes themselves. Why do we have to at- tempt to downgrade everyone and everything on the ‘other’ side? Is it so essential to our society that we attempt to foster ridicule and hate? Partially because of the hysterical posturings of people like Steve K. Walz, it is silly to even think about the counter plan being organized by the ‘good guys’, the games which will sup- posedly take the place of the Olympics. . Any ‘freedom games’ or alternate Olympics will be nothing more than window dressing for the U.S. and their drop out friends. They will be created allegedly for the interests of the athletes, but will in actuality be a manipulated event to present a good guy image. Athletics, particularly at the amateur level, are highly individualistic. Any nation, whether east or west, at- tempting to manipulate and use these athletes, cannot hold their head high. There will, as always, be some great performances coming out of Lake Placid. And some of them will be from Americans and some by Soviets. Each should be applauded, not because of _B3-Wednesday, February 6, 1980 - North Shore News the origins of the athlete, but because of the effort and dedication of will by the individual athlete. After all, this is what sport is all about, even though the message hasn't penetrated the minds of the politicians. The disbandment of the North Shore Junior Canadians is for league and management problems in one sense, a nyicrocosm of the Olympic problems. No matter what rationale is given, no matter what the justification for the action taken, it is always the athlete that suffers from the actions of those not involved in the physical activity.
