For months now island residents have been hearing conflicting reports about a new fast-ferry passenger service rumored to be coming their way. But that’s all they’ve heard. Neither the provincial gov- ernment ror island Development Group Ltd., the Victoria-based company that first won approval to operate the ferry service, has given Bowen [Islanders any real infor- mation on a service that will have a significant impact on their community. Transportation Minister Lyali Hanson said the ferry service has been cancelled. Rat Island Deveiopment Group president Stewart Vinnels later said his company plans to proceed with the fast-ferry service. Brees: ISLAND'S fast {ferry is fast LETTER OF THE DAY Vinnels now claims that the government set an unrealistic start-up date for the ser- vice, so that it would-be up and running in time for a fall election. In the meantime Bowen Island residents have unanswered questions. Residents are concerned that a fast ferry would bring with it an influx of Lower Mainlanders to Bowen Island. Residents legitimately fear destruction of the com- munity’s rural way of life. Location of the fast ferry’s Bowen Island terminal and the impact it would have on area parking are other major concerns. Properly executed the service might well be a boon to the Bowen Island economy. But with teo little local input and too much political confusion, the Bowen Island fast ferry plan appears fast headed for cblivion. Without doing the arithmetic, mos! people guess somewhere around: the size of Canada or some large country. In fact, ail the people slive now might take up an area tise size of B.C.’s Lower Mainland, from Chilliwack to the sea, giving them ‘‘average nightclub proximity,’’ as Bucky said. Of course we don’t want to live that way, but the point is that ihe media myth of overpopulation is repudiated by simple scientific ex- orth shore SUNDAY + WEONABDAY + FRIDAY 1139 Lonsdale Avenue, ~ North Vancouver.
