A water depth of four inches (10 cm) is deep enough to allow a six-pound (2.7 kg) fish to make it up the river to the hatchery. Since they were introduced into the Capilano. River in 1969, chinook salmon have never ap- proached the numbers of coho that return to the river’s hatchery each year. Historically, chinook begin ap- pearing in local rivers in September. Seymour hatchery manager Janis Jervis said that a lot of fish can be seen in the river, but added that it was too early to speculate on how many will make it up river into the traps. “‘There are some pinks (salmon) in the lower parts of the fiver, which is always a good sign,”’ said Jervis. This year. is a ‘‘pink’’ year, meaning that pink salmon. smolt (young salmon) released _ three years ago are expected to return to spawn this season.
