However, it was only given its official title after Carson’s current: head coach John Buchanan’s dad James passed away in 1986. James Buchanan was a vice- principal at both Handsworth and Carson Graham during his tenure in the district. Several coaches and school. officials decided it would be a fitting tribute to give a handle to the annual matchup, and the Buchanan Bow! was born. It’s been an even split in terms of wins during the last two years: the Carson junior squad has been victorious in both years while the °98 and 99 senior matchups went to Handsworth. This year, however, may be a different matter altogether — at least on the senior side of things wl Royals are limping through an injury-plagued sea- son to the tune of 1- 5 while the Carson squad has posted a respectable 5-2 overall record. On Saturday the Royals dropped .a 40-14 tilt: to Timberline, while Carson con- tinued to improve in their Friday game against Notre Dame, handing the visitors a 47-4 loss. Handsworth head coach ‘Joe Bell said his team might be seen as the underdog this time | around, but he relishes the role.
