Third SeaBus was — recommended From page 1 Back in 1989, then-transport bosses BC Transit recom- mended that a third SeaBus vessel be introduced by 2006 to increase service. But recent TransLink plans have focused on expanded SkyTrain service and improved bus routes in the Vancouver and Richmond core. Last week, Coast Mountain representative Mike Bellavy told the News that an investment in a third SeaBus isn’t likely to happen in this decade. “The demand is not seen as being crucial,” he said. “We could definitely use a third SeaBus, but we can only do what we have the budget for, and we're trying to divy aut our equip- ment and personnel according to demand.” TransLink staff recently estimated the capital cost of a new SeaBus at $15 mil- lion. Freedman claims ScaBus engine failures have become “com- monplace.” There haven’t been any problems on the open water so far. But engine fatigue coupled with the erosion of the sheer-pin system, which protects the propellers from damaging debris, and problems with the steering system, has had a serious impact | on the vessel’s ability to stop when docking. “It is,” said Freedman, “perhaps just a matter of time until one of these vessels has a catastrophic breakdown or. other. mishap and is thereby unable to continue operation.” However Bellavy is confident that the work regularly carried out by maintenance staff is sufficient to keep the boats running. “We've developed the -Tegion: s road and transit plan based on your comments.
