BRITAIN UPDATE irthplace of Brontes restored THE literary Bronte sis- ters were not born in Haworth — where the parsonage is justly pop- ular — but six miles away in the West Yorkshire village of Thornton. Three years age, novelist Barbara Whitehead, with a writer friend, bought the 1863 house in Market street, and is gradually restoring it to its Regency splendour. The Rev. Patrick Bronte and his wife lived there from 1815 to 1820 — the church provided the house for the curate — and during this time Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne were born. . Whitehead, whose books include one about Charlotte's lifelong friendship with Ellen Nussey, has also bought the 19th century shop opposite, which she hopes will become a visitor and information centre when funds are available. The birthplace is now open daily to visitors, except Mondays, from noon to 4 p.m. until Sept. 30, admission £2.50 adults, £2 senior citizens, £1 children. For further information, call 01274 830849.
