Many of the recent concerns cevolve around Bill C-4' which A provides 1¢ VIEW POINT. Canadian native bands, including the Squamish, the right to manage their reserve lands without interference from the federal government. The leg- islation requires bands to draft a land code, which is a blueprint that out- lines the rules governing the use and occupancy of reserve lands. The code is supposed to involve input from band membership. But the Squamish communication breakdown appears to have affected how widespread that input has been thus far. A troubling aspect of the Bill C-49 legislation is the absence of any requirement that native bands com- municate with their non-native municipal neighbours over their land codes or proposed land use.
