Fraser Academy _ Vancouver, B.C. For Students with Different Learning Styles Fraser Academy is a school designed to help students with dyslexia and other language- processing problems. These are students who have tried public school or other general education independent schools and have found they have difficulty in large classes which are often taught ro mect the learning styles of the general population. In order to attend Fraser Academy, 2 student must meet the admissions criteria, We require a psycho-educational . assessment done by a certified tester and school reports from the last school attended. The assessment must show chat the student is indeed dyslexic or has language- processing problems that are closely aligned with dyslexia. At Fraser Academy, teachers use a multi- sensory approach to teaching. Instruction is delivered orally, in writing and kinesthetically. That is, the student hears it, reads it, may talk about it or may do something physical to aid the learning. Aside from smiall classroom instruction, cach student has eighty minutes a day devoted to language development. ‘The student works one on. one with a tutor for forty minutes learning phonics, decoding, writing, reading for word recognition and reading for comprchension. Each student chen has forty minutes ot independent work to practise these lessons. Our mission is to prepare students to function in che mainstream. Thus, our students go on to university, college, technical instirutes, other post-secondary educational institutes and the work force.
