HE COMES late. But he
comes.

Twenty years ago Richard
Gwyn sat in my office at the
Vancouver Sun talking about the
state of the nation. He is a Toronto
Star columnist and I told him
Canada was on a disastrous immi-
gration course.

“Why don't you write about
it?” I asked him.

He looked blankly at me. No
newspaper in the country hewed
more closely to the Trudeau line, ,
and Gwyn was once a staff assis-
tant to Eric Kierans, a Liberal
minister.

. But now he has written a book
— Nationalism Without Walls —
that shows he has cottoned on to a
few things.

_. The book does contain 2 heap
of sociological mumbo-jumbo.
But it seems to have dawned on
him that Canadian immigration is
a hopeless mess. —

He bears out what Noel Wright
once observed. It isn’t so much
what is said but who says it. .

‘So it is of some significance

180-degree turn on the politics of

‘attacks on immigration as
“tirades.”
He defines multiculturalism as

“Marxism reduced frora econom- .

ics to culture.” Neat, And he
Makes much of “post-modernism,”
which I interpret as the collapse
‘of every value that once made this

Thus, the elites scorn our histo-
ry as “sexist, racist, militaristic
and polluting,” and he quotes
Svend Robinson as asking, “Who
says that freedom of speech is
more important than equality?”

Not our disaster masters in
Ottawa.

In the former U.S.S.R. they
had “command socialism.” Here

_ we have command liberalism.
Everything fiows from the top
down rather than from the bottom
up. Judges “read in” laws that are
not in the law, which they did
with homosexual “rights.” And,
states the author, “we have the
most politically correct constitu-
tion in the world.” ;

No other country is crazy
enough to grant full constitutional
protection to non-citizens, a

decided that refugees, real or
phony, have full right of appeal to
the highest level, complete with
taxpayer-paid legal aid.

Gwyn confirms, also, that the
immigration system exists for the
immigrants and that its policies
are dictated by them. Why?
Because the Liberals (and the
Tories before them) now depend
on the immigrant vote.

That explains why we are still
packing them in at a massive rate,
despite high unemployment.

Per capita, “we have the
world’s largest immigration
intake, the most generous refugee
program, and the only official
multiculturalism program.”

“The political class,” he says,
“never explained to Canadians
what was happening. During the
1970s, no politician or official
told the people of Toronto or
Vancouver that within a quarter of
acentury their cities would be
predominantly non-white, or (that
they would be) northern echoes of
Los Angeles.”

Sorry, Richard. But I have to
say this. You didn’t explain those
things, either. If you had tried it, .
you would no longer have been
working for the Star. But as you
now state:

“Overwhelmingly, the anti-
racist programs of the Department
of Multiculturalism are directed at

white or European-Canadians.”

For obvious reasons he omits
the media from criticism, except
to say they are only too happy to
inflate refugee sob stories, etc.

Then there’s the matter of how
criticism of the minorities can be
a dangerous thing. Gwyn says it
has given rise to “the
McCarthyism of the 1990s." (And
where have you read that
before?!)
