The tie-back should be in the
upper or the lower third of the walt
(rather than in the centre) to avoid
a rigid and staged look. Suitable
fabrics range from soft, transtucent
materials to heavy brocade, { tapes-
try and velvet.

Today's formal drapery designs
still resemble the styles created by
Thomas Chippendale and Thomas
Sheraton 200 years ago. Both
designers were known mainly as

cabinet makers, but both published
beautifully detailed sketches of
claborate window treatments to
match the furnishing styles they
created.

The vocabulary is unchanged as
well. Valances (the horizontal
treatment at the top of the window
that hides the drapery hardware)
were festooned or ornamented with
tassels and fringes. Jabots (fabric
cascades on either side of the win-
dow) had ruffles or lace. Finials (a
finishing ornament at the end of -
curtain ruds or poles) were shaped
like spheres, spires or pineapples.

sion of a traditional design.

The panels can be attached with
silk cord or curlain rings lo a sim-
ple or decorative rod. ft would be
intriguing to see the hidden or
inside part of the pleats in a slight-
ly darker shade.

The treatment is ideal for a nar-
row window or door which opens
outward. The rod should be
installed just above the opening so
that the fabric exposes glass rather
than part of the wall and glass.
