German Shepherds that can’t walk
and skunk spraying” mye

Q@: | have an’ old German
Shepherd that is losing control of

his hind tegs. He doesn't seem to -

be in pain but the problem is get-

ting worse. Can | help him?

Dr. G: What you have described

is a disease called degenerative -

myelopathy, a common condition
in’ German . Shepherds.
Degenerative myelopathy simply
means deterioration of the spinal .
cord. As time goes on, the
nerves to the hind jegs progres-
sively lose function. The dog
loses all muscle tone and even-
tually cannot get up.

The disease itself is not painful
but arthritis which often accom-
panies it, does cause pain. The
key to managing this disease is
to maintain as much muscle
strength as possible. Regular
exercise helps, especially swim-
ming. Injections of cortisone can
reduce the pain of arthritis. As
well, some owners claim Glanolin
500 given once daily is benefi-
cial. This supplement is sold at
health food stores.
