family pet project

Spock, it pays to read up on the
best ways to safeguard your faith-
ful, furry, four-legged friends.

Here are a few simple tips that
will make life mare enjoyable for
both your pet and vourself

On the Road:

You and your other passengers
may. be safely belted for the car
trip. but what about your dog or
cat;

H You may have trouble keeping
your pet in place at home — those
nasty curpet stains are proof -— but
pets shouldn't have the rule of the
car;

In an accident, keeping a pet
secure is as logical as it is for you
10 be secure. Securing your pet also
means it won't jump about and dis-
tract you, causing an accident in the
first place:

B@ For cats and small dogs. it is
best to use a carry case or travel
hutch. Leave it on the floor or tie it
down to the back seat. For larger
dogs, there are harnesses available
that fit around the animal’s chest
and shoulders and tie to the seat
belt:

B On especially fong trips. you
may want to ask the vel for a tran-
quilizer:

B One definite travel don’t: never
put pets in back of a pickup truck.
They can be injured during the ride

and can get loose when you stop.

Surviving a long trip is a good
enough reason to pamper your pet.

You may think the gift you
looked doggedly for is the cat's
meow, but be careful that it won't
harm the pet's health,

Remember to avoid toys pets
can rip apart.

The danger: they can swallow a
piece and either choke on it or have
trouble passing it. Hard toys. like a
plastic bone, are better than soft
rubber loys.

Small balls, even if they ‘re hard
and can’t be ripped, can sometimes
slip down a large animal's throat.
